Periodontal Disease Treatment
Once you have received a diagnosis of periodontal disease by your Dentist or Dental Hygienist your treatment plan will be recommended based on what stage you are in. If the disease is caught in the early stages, with no damage being done, a simple one to two cleanings should fix the problem. Your Dentist or Dental Hygienist will need your help with following good daily dental habits, such as brushing, flossing and rinsing properly and receiving dental cleanings on regular bases.
If however, the disease has progressed beyond the first stage of gingivitis, into periodontitis, we will need to do what is called a deep cleaning. This cleaning is typically done in sections, otherwise known as quadrants. .In this deep cleaning we will numb each quadrant separately and remove plaque, tartar, toxins and tartar with our specialty scaling equipment. We will smooth the coarse spots that have been made on the surfaces of your roots in a process called planning. This procedure should help the pockets that have been created between the gums and teeth to shrink as well as help the gum tissue to heal. After the scaling and root planing procedure has been completed your Dentist or Dental Hygienist may recommend an electric toothbrush, medications and prescription mouth rinses to help with the healing and control the infection.
After the deep cleaning has been performed if your pockets still have not healed, periodontal surgery may be recommended, performed by either your Dentist or Dental Hygienist or a Periodontist, depending on the location and severity. This surgery will reduce the depths of your pockets and make your teeth easier to clean. No matter what stage you are in, don’t panic, we will help you every step of the way.
