Composite Fillings

Composite Fillings

The first thing we do with a tooth that has been cracked, fractured or decayed is to remove the damaged portion of the tooth and replace it with a filling material. There are two types of fillings typically used for filling cavity holes in dental offices. Composite (tooth-colored) and amalgam. Because composite material is tooth colored it can match the color of your current teeth and are commonly used in the front and visible areas of the mouth. Composite fillings are durable, lasting many years, but as with any filling material it is not permanent and will need to be replaced one day.

Why Do I Need a Filling?

There are several reason why a composite filling would be the right form of restorative dentistry for you. Some of these are:

  • Closing Gaps Between Teeth
  • Decayed Teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Worn Teeth
How do You Do It?

The process of a getting an composite filling is relatively simple and usually can be taken care of in one appointment. Your Dentist or Dental Hygienist  will numb your tooth, remove the decay and thoroughly clean and prepare the area. At that point the filling will be placed, shaped to your mouth and polished to ensure an even bite. You may experience some sensitivity to food temperature when the filling is first placed, but this sensitivity will go away after your tooth is acclimated to the filling. Your Dentist or Dental Hygienist will let you know your post-care instructions after your treatment is finished. Good dental habits, eating healthy and regular visits will extend the life of your fillings.
